Low coffee tables, couches, beds, and small cafe tables often force the applicant and technician into awkward positions. That can make it harder to roll the fingers smoothly and keep the fingerprint card stable.
Fingerprint Rolling Is Easier At The Right Height

Curved counters, rounded edges, deeply recessed counters, or surfaces blocked by cabinets or objects can make the process harder. We need enough open space so the finger can be rolled smoothly without the applicant’s hand being cramped or blocked.
The location itself is less important than having a usable edge, a stable surface, and enough room to work.
Good Lighting Is Important
Ink fingerprinting is visual. We need to see the actual impressions on the card.
During an appointment, we are looking for:

Many applicants assume there is only one type of fingerprint card. In reality, the requesting agency determines the card.
The FD-258 fingerprint card is the most common card and is widely used for employment, licensing, FBI background checks, and many other purposes. Because it is so common, we can usually bring FD-258 cards when applicants need them.
